Exterior Colour & Material Selections
for CDC & DA Approval in Sydney & NSW.
Make clear, confident exterior decisions — before your plans are submitted, approved, or built.
Designed for NSW projects requiring a CDC or DA finishes schedule.
You’re not meant to make these decisions alone
At this stage of your build — when plans are finalised and approvals are approaching — you’re being asked to make decisions that will shape your home for decades.
And once these decisions are locked in…
they’re expensive to change.
Bricks. Cladding. Roof. Garage. Windows. Trims. Porch tiles. Timber tones. Feature materials. Exterior paint colours.
Not small choices.
→ Permanent, visible, and difficult to undo.
And no one tells you how easy it is to get this wrong.
If you’ve been second-guessing your exterior colour and material selections — this is a normal stage of the process.
Most clients come to me feeling:
• unsure how colours and materials will work together
• overwhelmed by too many options
• worried about making a costly mistake
• pressured to commit before they’re ready
• unclear what’s required for CDC or DA approval
• unable to visualise the final outcome
This is the point where people say:
“We know what we want… we just don’t know how to bring it together.”
This is where decisions become clear.
Where your exterior comes together as a cohesive whole —
not a collection of separate choices.
From confusion to clear, confident decisions
This is where we make the right exterior decisions — before anything is submitted, approved, or built.
I assess your plans, materials, and surroundings — and guide a cohesive exterior palette that works as a whole.
So instead of second guessing…
→ you move forward knowing your selections are right.
This is ideal if you need expert guidance on your exterior selections — without committing to full home direction.

FAQs
How soon can I book?
Bookings generally fill 2–3 weeks ahead. If you’re preparing for CDC or DA deadlines, please mention this when enquiring.
Do I need my architectural or draftsperson plans first?
Yes — even a preliminary plan is enough. We’ll use it to mark up colour and material placements clearly as well as produce your 3D model and render for you.
Is this for renovations as well as new builds?
Absolutely. Renovation clients also require cohesive exterior direction and may require documentation for council submissions depending on the extent of their renovations and changes.
Can we include landscaping?
Landscaping influences colour balance, so we’ll consider it conceptually, but it is not included in this package.
Will my exterior colour and material choices ever be rejected when I’m going through CDC or DA?
Yes — there is a possibility that your proposed selections may be questioned, especially if your site is in a developer estate with design guidelines, heritage overlay, or other local planning constraints. For example, many new estates require an exterior colours & materials palette submission to meet the Estate Design Guidelines.
With a DA, the local council has merit-based assessment power and may request changes if materials or colours are deemed inconsistent with the streetscape. With a CDC (complying development) your selections must satisfy all predetermined standards in the relevant SEPP code.
That’s why it’s essential to work with a designer who understands these requirements — so you choose a scheme that feels beautiful to you and meets the approval framework for your project site.
Our consultation includes marked-up plans and a materials schedule specifically written for CDC/DA documentation.
Do I need to finalise my exterior colours and materials before I lodge for CDC or DA approval?
Yes — it’s highly recommended to define your exterior colour and material scheme prior to lodging your CDC or DA. The approval process in NSW often requires a detailed finishes and materials schedule as part of the documentation.
If your exterior details are still uncertain, it can lead to delays, additional requests for information from the certifier or council, or potential redesigns.
By clarifying your palette and materials early — with bricks, cladding, roof colour, garage door, window frames, porch tiles, and trims clearly resolved — you’ll increase your confidence and streamline approval and construction phases.
Our Exterior Evolution program helps you complete this important step in one guided consultation, before you lock in your submission.
