Exterior Colour Consultation in Yowie Bay: Choosing Fence Colours for a Red Brick Home
Quick Answer: Choosing the Right Fence Colour for a Red Brick Home
When selecting a fence colour for a red brick house, the goal is to complement the undertones of the brick rather than compete with them. In this Yowie Bay project, the brick contained deeper burgundy and charcoal tones, so the final palette focused on balanced neutrals and a grounding charcoal accent. This allowed the fence to feel connected to the home — not like an afterthought.
→ The key?
Most people aren’t choosing the wrong colour…
They’re choosing colours without understanding the undertones already in their brick.
The best fence colours for deep red/charcoal brick homes are:
• soft, balanced neutrals
• grounded charcoals
• tones that support — not compete
If you’re unsure what will actually work with your brick, this is exactly where most people get stuck.

When Exterior Colour Decisions Start to Feel Overwhelming
A few weeks ago I received a call from a local landscaper I’ve worked with for years.
He had just completed installing a beautiful new fence for his clients in Yowie Bay, but the project had hit a small roadblock.
They simply couldn’t decide what colour to paint it.
And if the decision wasn’t made soon, it was going to delay the finishing stages of the landscaping work.
This situation is actually very common. When you’re looking at brick, roof tiles, paving, garden planting and fencing all at once, choosing a paint colour can suddenly feel much bigger than it should.
That’s exactly where an exterior colour consultation becomes incredibly helpful.
Instead of guessing, the goal is to step back and look at the entire home — materials, undertones, and surroundings — and create a palette that works together.
→ Because when you don’t…
that’s when homes start to feel disconnected.
The Existing Home
The home already had beautiful foundations:
• deep red brick with charcoal variation
• a dark roof anchoring the facade
• established landscaping
• neutral paving at the rear
But there were also several competing tones:
• cream two-tone window frames
• aging soffits
• new fence elements needing colour direction
• paving that needed to feel intentional
Without a clear plan, it’s easy for each decision to feel disconnected.
This is exactly why people book an exterior colour consultant.
Before the Consultation
Dulux Colour Palette for Red Brick House
Before we met, the homeowners were feeling stuck between several colour directions for their new fence and exterior details.
They weren’t sure whether to:
• match the fence colour to the brick
• introduce a darker contrast
• keep everything light and neutral
Choosing the wrong colour could make the fence feel disconnected from the house, or draw attention for the wrong reasons.
Red brick homes can be tricky because the undertones vary so much. Some lean orange, others burgundy, and some contain charcoal or brown variation.
→ This is exactly why I created a ready-made version of this palette.
Because once you understand the undertones…
the decisions actually become simple.

In this case, the brick had beautiful depth with cooler burgundy and charcoal flecks, which meant we could design a palette that felt grounded and refined.
The Design Direction
Once we reviewed the undertones in the brick and surrounding materials, the direction became much clearer.
Rather than competing with the brick, the palette was designed to support and balance it.
The solution included:
• a deeper charcoal tone to anchor the entry
• warm neutral tones for posts and fencing
• light tones for windows and eaves to soften the facade
• natural stone paving that complements the brick’s warmth
This approach allows the home to feel cohesive and intentional from the street, while still respecting the character of the original brickwork.
Once the painting and final landscaping elements are completed, the result will feel calm, balanced and refreshed.
